THE LOVER’S EPITAPH, FROM DON
QUIXOTE

Miguel Cervantes—1547-1616.

Yaze aqui de un Amador
El misero cuerpo elado,
Que fue pastor de ganado,
Perdido por desamor
Murio a manos del rigor
De una esquiva, hermosa, ingrata,
Con quien su imperio dilata
La tirania de amor.

Here lies the poor, proud body of a cowboy lover,—
A woman’s cruel hand it was from which he died;
She scorned his love—he never will recover—
Free from her tyranny he’s over the divide.
