Tennant, Edgar, Richard and William [Echoes of Pioneer Days, page 5, column 1] Among the first families to make a settlement on the Marathon County side (before the town was named). They made entry under the Homestead Act receiving 80 acres each. They set to work building a log shanty on William’s claim filling the chinks with yellow clay that could be found anywhere under a foot of black loamy soil.

Tessmer, John [Sketch of Pioneers, page 20, column 1] In 1855, John married Minnie Rosinski at Vice Preston, Germany. Five of their children were born in Germany. They came to America in 1866 and settled in Wisconsin. Here a sixth child was born, Charley. In 1873 the family settled on a wild tract of land 2 1/2 miles Southwest of Colby. Thomas, D. J. [Businessmen of 1887, page 43, column 1] His mill and broom handle factory is located 3/4 of a mile West of Colby. He later sold the mill to D. W. Worden of Mosinee, how had a crew dismantle the mill and move it to Mosinee.

Tuttle, Sheldon [Echoes of Pioneer Days, page 8, column 2] Pioneer settler in SW corner the township of Colby called Peterson Settlement. In 1874 the first township of Beaver meeting was held in the cabin of Sheldon. Sheldon was elected as supervisor of the town of Beaver in 1875.

Umhoefer, A. X. [Sketches of Pioneers, page 54, column 2] He was born in Cherokee, January of 1886. He married Mary Lyons in September of 1913, who died in 1918. He then married Bertha LaBudde in 1923. He had three children, twin sons James and Paul and a daughter Mary. He graduated from Colby High School and also the University of Wisconsin. He taught school a few years, was associated in the lumber business with his brother Emil and his uncle, Joe Weix, then he entered into partnership with his father-in-law James E. Umhoefer, Anton [Colby Post Office, page 65, column 2, page 66, columns 1 & 2] Appointed postmaster in 1935 and held the office for 19 years, and 8 months.

A formula of his several bitters was furnished the Gov. Int. Dept. and was pronounced by the Commissioner as admissible, under the excise laws, in the same class as patent medicines.

Walbridge [Echoes of Pioneer Days, page 10, column 2] Settled in the hamlet of Colby in the summer and fall of 1873.

Walbridge, G. J. [Sketches of Pioneers, page 23, column 2] He was born in Vermont in 1844 and came to Menasha in 1857. He lived on a farm until he came to Colby in 1874 where he was engaged in the hardware business. He also owned a farm in Colby and was largely interested in raising purebred stock. He was also chairman of the town of four years and chairman of the county board for one year.

Walker, B. F. [Sketches of Pioneers, page 23, column 2] Mr. Walker was a merchant in Colby and was born in England in 1844. At the early age of six, he began making his way by working for the Navies at a shilling a day. At twelve, he smuggled himself aboard a ship and when discovered, the captain made him a cabin boy. He was striving to reach his grandfather in New York He served in the Civil War and came to Colby in 1876.

Weix, Michael [Sketches of Pioneers, page 24, column 2, photo of business, page 24, column 2] Michael was born in Leroy, Wisconsin in 1855. He came to this vicinity in 1878 at the age of 23. He married Mary Ohlinger in Lomira, Wisconsin and they settled in the town of Hull. In 1904 he sold his farm to Leonard Schraufnagle, his nephew, an moved to the city of Colby to operate a butcher shop of Albert Hecker. Welsch, Henry Jr. [Sketches of Pioneers, page 21, column 2, photo of business, page 21, columns 1 & 2] He purchased the drayline from his father in 1911 and in the fall of that year, engaged in the coal business. After his death, his daughter and her husband (Nola and Nathan Dessloch) operated the business under the name of J. J. Welsch Coal Sales. The coal and cartage business was in operation 44 years in the same location.

Welsch, Henry Sr. [Sketches of Pioneers, page 21, column 1] Henry Sr. was born in Prussia in 1840 and emigrated to the U.S. with his parents in 1847. He served in the Civil War, was honorably discharged and carried the effects of a rebel bullet in the battle of Chancellersville. He came to Clark County in 1876 and purchased a farm in sec. 24, town of Green Grove. Later he lived in Colby with the exception of four years in Hemlock, Wisconsin. He later built a hotel on First St. and was engaged in a freightline. [Photo, page 32, column 2] Photo of Henry Welsch Sr. home.

[Businessmen of 1887, page 41, column 2] General store is owned by Henry Welsch. He has only been in the village six months, tends to outside business and leaves the store under the management of his son. He later engaged in a freightline.

Will, Wm. Jr. [Sketches of Pioneers, page 26, column 2] He was born in 1880 and was the first agent of the Standard Oil Company, which marked it’s beginning in the City of Colby in the early 1900’s. He served the community as agent for 15 years. Later Wm. Waldhart was agent during the combining of the Abbotsford bulk plant and the Colby plant. A. Hunt of Dorchester was selected agent for both plants and Elmer Dehne was the driver-salesman.

Mr. Will moved to the farm and his son, Will Jr. operated the livery business. He was also engaged in funeral work.

He served as a soldier for two years, engaging in the exploration and mining field. In 1877 he came to the town of Green Grove where he conducted the first store and post office.
