Way Back When

It’s time to get to work!  This week’s Way Back When photo showcases a young man dressed in overalls, a work shirt, and work boots, sitting on a large piece of machinery.  His leg rests over the curve of one of the oversized wheels as he sits atop the machine. Do you know who this young man is?  Do you know where this photo was taken or what the piece of machinery is used for?  Let us know by contacting The Thorp Courier.

Last week’s Way Back When photo took us back to the former Thorp Public Library, a location that is now the Moose Lodge.  Joseph Possley sent The Thorp Courier some information about the former library.  The library was originally fostered by a man named William Wagner until it was taken over by a civic organization, The Union Club.  The Union Club was organized in 1899, originally, as a social club, but the women soon realized the town needed a library and set out to provide one.  They made a payment on the first building used as a library and for many years, selected and paid for most of the books.  The Club also paid the librarian’s salary.  In 1921, the Club decided upon a campaign to raise funds for a new building.  By 1925, the present building was completed.
