Note: Names listed in bold and italics are from the Lebanon City Directory of 1881, while additional information came from the 1880 census of Linn County. Only those businesses who paid to be listed appeared in the directory. Additional inhabitants listed in the city of Lebanon and on the 1880 census are after the directory name section. This does not include people living outside of the city in the surrounding countryside.

Andrews, D., postoffice

In the 1880 Census of Linn County, D. Andrews was listed at house 117, age 39, druggist, born in Connecticut. His wife was listed as A. H. Andrews, age 24, keeping house, born in Illinois. Two daughters were listed: O.N., age 2, and J.P., age less than 1 year.

Ballard & Powell, physicians and surgeon

D. W. Ballard listed in 1880 household 135, age 55, physician, born in Indiana. His wife J.E., keeping house, age 49, born in Indiana. Children listed are Florence, 18; Carrie, 16; Frank, 13; Maud, 9, and Ora, 4.

In the next household is J. M. Powell, age 28, physician, born in Oregon.

Baum, S., groceries

Blick, J.N., blacksmith

John Blick is listed in the household of C. B. Allison [see below]. John is age 30, a boarder, a blacksmith by trade, born in Ohio.

Bodie, R., wagon maker

In 1880, R. Bode is listed in household 123, age 38, a wagon master, born in New Jersey. His wife Caroline is 28, keeping house, also born in New Jersey. Children listed are H.H., age 8, born in Minnesota, and Nancey, 5, born in Wisconsin.

Bond, W.M., St. Charles Hotel

William M. Bond is listed in 1880 in the household of his father, Green Bond, 55, farmer, who was born in Illinois. William is 22, a general laborer, born in Iowa. Green's wife Emma, age 40, is listed as Hotel Keeper. She was born in Illinois. Other children in Green Bond's house are Laura, age 17, born in Iowa; Elli, 22, a daughter-in-law born in Oregon. Three boarders were also in the house: F. Hindermise, 55, farmer, born in Wurtemberg; John Mills, 55, butcher shop laborer; and Edward Gilson, age 21, a general laborer born in Virginia.

Bryant, Z.T., cabinet maker

In the 1880 census, there is an S. T. Bryant listed in house 132, carpenter, born in Indiana. His wife Mary M., keeping house, age 26, born in Oregon. I do not know if this is the same as Zachariah T. Bryant.

Burkhart, & Bilyeu, livery, feed stable and stage office

G. W. Burkhart is listed in 1880 at house 138, age 28, livery owner, born in Oregon. His wife is listed as S. J., age 28, keeping house, born in Missouri. M. S., a daughter who was 3, and F. F., a son age 2 are also listed.

J. E. Bilyeu is in household 104, age 30, livery stable laborer, born in Oregon. His wife Arena J. is 26, keeping house, born in Oregon.

Carter, L.C., constable

Clauden, S.H., W.F.& Co.'s agent. (Claughton, S.H.)(Wells Fargo & Co.)

Claudner, S.H., saddle and harness maker. (Claughton, S.H.)

C. W. Claughton, age 45, saddle maker, born in Missouri is listed in the 1880 census in house 143. His wife Eliza J., age 41, born in Illinois was keeping house. Children listed are William C., 21, saddle maker; Emma Catherine, 14; Elmer G., 12; E. E. (daughter), age 9; and Infant son, under 1 year.

Donaca, W.B., groceries

William B. Donaca is in house 126, age 42, grocer, born in Missouri. His wife Lenora J. is 34, born in Missouri, and keeping house. Children listed are John Middleton, age 8; L. E. (daughter) age 6; William Hayes, age 3; and C. W., (son) age 1. Listed in the house is S. E. Harbin, age 16, sister-in-law.

Ervin, A., boot and shoe dealer

Abram Ervin is in house 127 in 1880; age 48, a bootmaker. He was born in Canada. His wife Elizabeth is 35, keep8ing house, also born in Canada. Children are Winfield, age 11; Melissa, age 9; Theresa, age 4; and Volney, age 1. Also listed in the household are C. Brown, age 22, friend born in Prussia; and J. Garden, age 45, boarder, orphan.

Foley L., druggist and physician

L. Foley is listed in 1880 in house 134, age 34, a physician born in Virginia. His wife Lily is 24, keeping house, also born in Virginia. There is a baby son, age 2, born in Iowa and J. B. Slater, a boarder, age 20, medical student, born in Oregon.

Hardy, Geo. W., watchmaker and jeweler

George W. Hardy is listed in house 116, age 32, photographer born in Ohio. His wife Zida is 33, keeping house, born in Ohio. Children listed are L. M. (daughter) age 8; A. B. (son), age 6; and C. O., (daughter) age 2.

Harmon, C.H., barber

C. W. Harmon is listed in house 112, age 24, occupation barber, born in Georgia. His wife L. V. is 21, keeping house, also born in Georgia. Other people in the house are Annie Riley, age 39, bookkeeper at store, born in Georgia; and T. T. Riley, age 17, brewer, born in Texas.

Hauks, J., meat market

Jacob Houk is listed in house 101, age 43, butcher, born in New York. His wife is listed as S. J., age 38, keeping house, born in Ohio. Children listed include Baxter Franklin, age 20, butcher shop laborer; Mary Elizabeth, daughter, age 14; William Ellsworth, age 11, and daughter Margaret Lovena, age 6. Hope, J.H.P., physician and surgeon

J. H. P. Hope is listed in house 111, age 53, physician, born in Indiana. His wife R. N. is 37, keeping house, born in Ohio. Son John is 12.

Johnson, J.H., meat market

Miller, F.M., attorney at law

F. M. Miller is in house 94, age 35, lawyer, born in Iowa. Other person in the house is H. S. 34, born in Iowa; and son Walter, age 2.

Montague & Cusic general merchandise

Charles Bruce Montague is in house 121, age 44, a general merchant, born in Scotland. His wife is Priscilla Catherine, age 40, keeping house, born in Missouri. Children listed are Clara A., age 16, born in Washington Territory; Clara A., age 16, born W. T.; M. C., daughter, age 14, born in W. T.; C. D., son age 13, born W. T.; daughter I. S., age 9, born in Oregon; and son R. B., age 6, born Oregon. M. E. Redpath, age 22 is listed as step daughter, born in the Washington Territory.

Listed in house 124 is J. W. Cusick, age 45, merchant, born in Illinois and his wife S. S., age 32, keeping house, born in Iowa. Three sons are listed as E. D., age 12; E. H., age 11, and H. B., age 2.

Mossholder, J.C., Centennial Hotel, lock and gunsmith

Joseph C. Mossholder is in house 108, age 46, gunsmith, born in Pennsylvania. His wife Sarah is 46, hotel keeper, also born in Pennsylvania. Daughter M. A. is 23, a milliner; son Jay is 19 and son Arthur is 12.

Nickerson, sash and door factory and planing mill. (Nickerson, Simon)

Simon A. Nickerson is listed in 1880 as being the head of house for #177, age 53, sash and door factory, born in Ohio. His wife is M. A., age 53, keeping house and also born in Ohio. Son Frank B. is 18, farmer; son Grant is 16, farm laborer; son Allen is 14, farm laborer, and daughter L. M. is 8.

Peterson & Son, watchmakers and jewelers

Asa Peterson is in house 118, age 58, watchmaker, born in Virginia. His wife is listed as F., age 54, keeping house, born in Kentucky. Son W. C. is 19, also listed as a watchmaker.

Powell, J.M., M.D., drugs and medicine

J. M. Powell is alone in house 136, age 28, physician, born in Oregon.

Preston, W.P., blacksmith

W. P. Preston, house 96, is 54 on the 1880 census, occupation blacksmith, born in Ohio. His wife Mary is 50, keeping house, born in Indiana. Daughter M. E. is 20.

Ralston & Co., general merchandise

J. M. Ralston, age 24, general merchant, is head of household 105. His wife L. A. was also 24, keeping house, born in Oregon. Son J. E. is 2, daugher M. L. is less than one year.

Jemima Ralston, wife of Jeremiah is in household 137, widow, born in Ohio. Her son Charles H. is 32, merchant, born in Nebraska. S. C. is listed as age 28, daughter-in-law. Other persons in the house are: M. L., grand daughter age 8; Charlie, grandson age 6; Frankie, grand daughter age 4, Jessie M., age 1, grand daughter; Callie Hamilton, daughter age 27; Minnie, age 5 and Mima age 2, both grand daughters.

Reed, Mrs. P.E., milliner

Perina E. Reed, wife of W. H. Reed (below), is in house 148, age 36, milliner.

Reed, W.H., saloon

W. H. Reed is listed in 1880 as being 44, a liquor dealer, place of birth unreadable. Children Clarence A., age 16 and daughter Frances E., age 13 are also in the house. Additonal information from the Lebanon Pioneer Cemetery book shows William H. Reed b. 23 Dec 1836 in Des Moines Co., IA, married to Perina Elizabeth Parrish 24 Feb 1859 in Linn Co. Their children are Harlan "Harley" P, Clarence A. and Frances E. "Nellie", who later married T. C. Peebler. William died 23 Jan 1897, Perina died 22 April 1915. William is buried in the Lebanon Pioneer Cemetery, and Perina is in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Smith, Geo. W., stoves and tinware and justice of the peace

G. W. Smith is on the 1880 census in house 106, age 36, tanner, born in Illinois. His wife is V. B., age 28, keeping house, born in Illinois. Two daughters listed: B. C., age 5; and P. A., age 2.

Wassom & Co., grist mill

Jonathan Wassom is head of household 176, age 55, fatmer, born in Tennessee. His wife Ruth is 53, keeping house, born in Pennsylvania. Two sons, M. R., farmer age 23 and O. A., age 20 are listed. Also in the house are Mary Kees, age 67, sister-in-law born in Virginia, and Phillip Linebarger, age 28, boarder, born in New York.

Richard Cheadle was also an owner of the grist mill and he is in household 173, age 50, farmer, born in Ohio. His wife Louisa L. is 45, keeping house, born in New York. Children are Emery M., 28, medical student; Adda, age 22; Louis, age 16, farm laborer; Kate, age 13, student; George, 10, student; Grace, age 7, and Gertrude, age 3.

John Little and James L. Cowen were also part owners of the grist mill, but I do not find them in the 1880 census in the Lebanon area.

Household 95: Charles Craft, age 46, general laborer, born in Pennsylvania; wife Clara A. age 26; daughters K. V. age 6 and C. S. age 4; and son B. F., age 2.

Household 97: Luther Elkins, age 71, retired farmer born in Maine; wife E., age 72; son Joseph age 47, flour miller; daughter-in-law M. B., age 32; grand daughters Annie B., age 12, student and M. J., age 4; and grand sons William W., age 10, and G. L., age 6.

Household 98: Santiam Academy. J. L. Gilbert is the principal, age 54 and born in Vermont; daughter Helen R. is 24, music teacher; son James Lucius, age 21, sash and door factory; daughter Mary E., 19, school teacher; daughter O. F., 17, student, and son Edgar L., 13, student.

Household 99: Joseph H. Powell, age 46, farmer, born in Illinois; wife Samantha A., 35, keeping house, born in Indiana; daughter Minnie L., 13 and son A. M., age 9.

Household 100: G. W. Wheeler, age 49, sewing machine agent, born in New York; wife M. J., age 49, dressmaker; son William H., age 24, farmer; son G. M., age 23, farmer, and son C. F., age 14, student.

Household 102: R. F. Jones, age 70, keeping house, born in Delaware; daughter S. S., age 43, born in Virginia.

Household 103: B. M. McDonnell, age 32, general laborer, born in Oregon; wife S. E., age 23, keeping house, born in Iowa; sons J. C., 5 and S. N., 2.

Household 107: Martin Bringham, age 49, machinist born in Indiana; wife T. J., age 43, keeping house, also born in Indiana; son Charles G., age 21; Ellen E., age 19; Dela Ann, age 13.

Household 109: G. W. Rice, age 30, general laborer born in Oregon; wife D., age 24, milliner, born in Ohio.

Household 110: William Rilea, age 47, sawyer, born in Ohio; wife D. E., keeping house, born in Indiana; Joseph Wasom, age 25, boarder, store clerk; Emma Mills, boarder, age 14, born in Illinois.
