The Clark County Sheriffs, 1859 - 1996.

After boundary difficulties were settled, Clark County legally became a county in 1853.  For the first few years, sheriff duties were handled by the constables of Pine Valley  Township.  The first sheriff was elected in 1858.  Following is a list of all the sheriffs who have served Clark County. Until recent years the sheriff and his family lived in the residence arrea of the jail (now the 1897 Jail Museum), and it was the duty of the sheriff and his wife to care for and feed the prisoners.  The names of the live-in sheriffs appear in bold letters. If there is an available obituary, the sheriff's name is underlined and all other available information such as biographies, memories and photos will follow the individual's name and can be accessed by clicking on the desired URL.
