Sanford "Sam" Benedict

November 20, 1853 - January 18, 1935

Sanford Benedict was the oldest son of Adonijah Benedict, a pioneer of York Township and a Civil War veteran. Sanford Benedict came to York Township with his parents in 1873.  He married Margaret Lawrence in 1879.  She had also come to York Township in the 1870s with her mother, Sophronia Lawrence and her grandfather, Anson Windsor.  Their children included William, Isabelle (Mrs. Guy Smith), and Rollie Benedict, who are also buried in York Center Cemetery. In addition, they had another son, Merle, who married the former Nora Judd.  Both Merle and Nora Judd are buried in Loyal Cemetery.  The original Sanford Benedict homestead was located in Section 9 on Heath Road.  In later years, Sanford and Margaret Benedict moved from the original homestead to a house (also in Section 9) on County Highway K.
