Jesse Lawrence was a pioneer of York Township who came to Clark County circa 1875 from Plymouth Township in Sheboygan County. His wife was the former Almeda Benedict, an aunt to Adonijah Benedict. A younger brother, Harvey, was the first husband of Sophronia (nee Windsor) Bassett. Harvey (who died during the Civil War) and Sophronia are the ancestors of many other York Township residents buried in York Center Cemetery. Jesse and Almeda Lawrence’s children include Horace A. Lawrence, Sarah (nee Lawrence) Lindsley, Zelina (nee Lawrence) Rowe and Irvin Lawrence, all of whom are buried in York Center Cemetery.
