Samuel, son of Willis and Elizabeth K. Gaines, is listed in his parents' home on the 1860 Scio census. He married Susan South 19 Sept. 1861. He and Susan appear on the 1870 census with daughters, Marian F., Minnie and Miranda. He appears on the 1880 census with wife, Arthusa A. and children: Marion F.C., Addie, M.C., Ida M., William Henry, and Spicy F.

On 22 Jan 1899, Samuel Gaines married Elizabeth Griffin in Linn Co. Samuel and Elizabeth appear on the 1910 South Scio census with Laf Cimpton, boarder, and stepdaughter, Bell Alward. They appear again on the 1920 Providence census with step-son Elmer Griffin living with them. Elizabeth Griffin Gaines is buried at Franklin Butte. Her stone reads 1840-1931.
